Rhode Island's Data

Image of Rhode Island

Rhode Island (officially the State of Rhode Island, formerly “Rhode Island and Providence Plantations”) is the smallest U.S. state by area. It was one of the original 13 colonies and the first to declare independence from Britain (May 1776) but last to ratify the Constitution in 1790. Providence is the capital and largest city. Rhode Island’s land area is only about 1,034 sq mi, and its population is ~1.11 million (2024). Despite its name, most of the state is on the mainland; “Rhode Island” originally referred to Aquidneck Island (where Newport is located). Rhode Island’s economy historically centered on maritime trade and textile manufacturing (it was an early industrial hub in the 19th century). Today, services dominate: healthcare, education (Brown University and RISD in Providence), and tourism (Newport’s Gilded Age mansions, beaches). The state also has a jewelry and silverware manufacturing legacy (Providence was once known as the Jewelry Capital). Rhode Island’s nominal GDP was about $82 billion in 2024, one of the smallest among states. Culturally, Rhode Island is known for its coastal New England charm, including sailing culture, distinct local foods like clam cakes and coffee milk, and a storied history (Newport was a major Colonial Era port and later a summer playground for America’s elite).

Understanding the BLS and Inflation in Rhode Island

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is a government agency that collects and analyzes economic data across the U.S., including states like Rhode Island. One of its key responsibilities is tracking inflation through the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures how the cost of everyday goods and services changes over time. Inflation can impact everything from housing prices to the cost of groceries, gas, and utilities across the area. By tracking inflation, the BLS helps people from Rhode Island understand how their purchasing power is affected and provides insights for businesses and policymakers.

What This Graph Represents

This graph shows inflation trends in Rhode Island using the CPI, highlighting how prices have changed over time. The x-axis represents time (months and years), while the y-axis represents price levels. If the graph moves upward, it means the cost of living is rising, which can affect everything from rent to gas prices. A flatter or downward trend suggests that inflation is stabilizing or decreasing. Keeping an eye on inflation is important for people from Rhode Island when budgeting for housing, wages, and daily expenses.
